Port of Tyne Overview
The Port of Tyne in North East England is one of the UK’s major deep-sea ports. It is one of the biggest trust ports in the UK, covering 650 acres, of which 200 acres of deep-water quayside land is available for occupation / investment.
The Port has excellent connectivity – by rail via three dedicated rail paths to the east coast mainline, by road via the A1 and A19, by air with direct links to Newcastle International Airport and by Metro via its ‘Tyne Dock’ station.
The Port offers a full logistics service, is one of only three ports in the UK with the International Pilotage Standard and is accredited with AEO status.
The Port of Tyne operates in a wide range of markets.
Offshore: The Port is ‘offshore wind ready’ and is the site of the operations and maintenance base for the biggest wind farm in the world, Dogger Bank. The Tyne also houses an extensive offshore supply base and has partnerships with several colleges and universities in the region.
Containers: The Port has a dedicated container terminal capable of handling 100,000 TEU per annum with regular European feeder services.
Bulks: The Port handles a range of bulk commodities and project cargo, including biomass from North America which supplies two power stations, grain, aggregates, as well as rail vehicles from Japan.
Automotive: The Port is the UK’s second largest car exporter with customers including Nissan and VW.
The Port of Tyne also houses the UK’s first (and still the only) Maritime Innovation Hub, helping our customers collaborate with leading innovation partners both in the UK and globally.

Innovation Hub
The UK’s first 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub, is an exciting partnership with Port of Tyne, Drax, Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (OREC), Nissan, Connected Places Catapult, Accenture, Royal HaskoningDHV, Ubisoft and the Department for Transport.
The 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub inspires partners to collaborate to develop solutions to technological challenges facing the maritime sector and the wider logistics industry both nationally and globally.
The 2050 Maritime Innovation Hub acts as a catalyst for sharing ideas, harnessing research and development, advancing technology and tackling shared challenges.
Fully aligned with the Government’s Maritime 2050 Strategy, the Maritime 2050 Innovation Hub works closely with the Department for Transport and MarRI-UK to ensure that it delivers for the benefit of the maritime sector.
