Cramlington is an ideal location for a company like AVID. We are close to the city of Newcastle and have 4 excellent universities that are all known for specialisms in engineering within a short distance. But we also have some fantastic countryside and coastlines in the area that provides an excellent quality of life for employees with reasonable property costs and excellent transport links.
We are now entering a phase of rapid expansion of the business and I cannot imagine a better location in the U.K. we have an excellent pool of talented people from apprentices and graduates to experienced staff to draw on and excellent availability of industrial space. The North East is also much less congested meaning commuting and logistics are better than many other areas. We have a good road network and exports via the Port of Tyne are great. All in all I would recommend the North East as a business location especially those involved in science or engineering.
AVID Technology Ltd.
AVID Technology Ltd. is recognised as a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance and heavy duty electric (EV) and hybrid (HEV) vehicle drive train components for example electric motors, power electronics and thermal management components such as electric pumps and fans.
The company counts some of the best known global manufacturers of trucks, off highway machinery and premium cars as its customers and is currently expanding rapidly as a result of the boom in electric vehicles. AVID has played an active role in helping its customers understand the benefits of vehicle electrification and the role this can play in reducing climate change and improving air quality.
The company was founded in 2004 by engineer and entrepreneur Ryan Maughan in 2004. Following a successful career in the motorsport industry, Ryan decided to set up AVID using his motorsport background to specialise in energy efficient control systems for vehicles. Now based in Cramlington, Northumberland, the AVID business has been focused on developing solutions that improve the efficiency of vehicles through smart control and electrification of the vehicle powertrain ever since.
In 2017 AVID secured a major contract with GKN to take over responsibility for the design, manufacture and sales of the EVO Axial Flux electric motor technology. The company also secured a major contract with the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) to design and install a waste heat recovery system for marine vessels to convert waste heat into valuable electricity.
2018 saw AVID proudly announce that an R&D project with Jaguar Land Rover had been won to help design components for the powertrains of JLR’s upcoming electrified vehicles, and also a project with Caterpillar to develop a new battery storage system for electric machinery. Moreover, due to increased sales and more investment, the staff headcount was doubled and a new office was set up to hold the now larger engineering department.
