“Locating our HQ in Newcastle was a conscious decision. Aside from being a great city with such friendly people and a real buzz, being situated at a leading genetics institution and within the Centre for Life places us at the heart of global DNA-based research.
The availability of high-calibre scientific researchers at Northumbria and Newcastle Universities, and the scope for excellent networking opportunities to develop our business internationally, was also a further deciding factor.”
QuantuMDx
QuantuMDx was founded in 2008 with the vision of democratising healthcare globally. The company’s flagship technology Q-POC™ is a handheld molecular diagnostic device that will provide results in less than 20 minutes for a few pounds at the patient’s side. It will empower overburdened healthcare systems worldwide with gold standard molecular diagnostics, at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional testing.
The company moved to Newcastle with six people, after their chairman Professor Sir John Burn first introduced them to the science facilities available in Newcastle’s International Centre for Life. The centre’s laboratory facilities and office space were essential for facilitating QuantuMDx’s growth when they first moved to the city. Since then, Newcastle’s mix of industry, universities, talent pool and scientific facilities have since provided the perfect environment to catalyse the company’s growth.
In the past year QuantuMDx has moved to its own dedicated headquarters, bespoke laboratories and engineering complex in Newcastle’s Quayside area; grown from 30 to over 75 employees; and partnered with world-leading organisations such as The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, global Good and the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND).
