Description:
As well as operating as a vibrant import / export facility on England’s North Sea coast, the Port of Sunderland offers a range of development opportunities with full multimodal access and Enterprise Zone benefits. The port benefits from 24-hour lock-free access to the open sea, with extensive deep-water river and dock berths (1,650 metres of quays), heavy lift capability in the form of multiple Liebherr 420 mobile cranes and a dedicated rail connection (five rail sidings handling trains over 200 metres long). New road links have been created to connect the port to the strategic highway network. The Port of Sunderland is municipally owned, offering maximum development flexibility.
Occupation of the port has increased dramatically, with several sites attracting new occupiers. The most recent announcement is by Norwegian company Wastefront, which is developing a £100 million, 7,000 sq.m. innovative tyre recycling plant on a 3-hectare site. This comes on top of valuable investments by Boskalis and Brineflow, to be followed by other major announcements by international companies that are already in the pipeline, one of which is expected to occupy a 5-hectare development plot.
The remaining development opportunities at the Port of Sunderland include Trinity Rail, Road & Sea Enterprise Zone, which offers 4.5-hectares of clear site area zoned for manufacturing and port-related uses. Enterprise Zone incentives are available in the form of form of Enhanced Capital Allowances. The site is fully multimodal, with rail and quay access available, making it ideal for companies engaged in manufacturing and logistics orientated towards import / export. Another opportunity is the 3.5-hectare East Shore Enterprise Zone, which due to its dockside location would particularly suit an offshore wind or subsea engineering operator that requires round-the-clock access to the North Sea.
