PARTNER SOUGHT FOR NEW WAVE OF DEVELOPMENT AT HOLBORN RIVERSIDE
Holborn Riverside, South Shields

A £200m riverside quarter is set to take a major step forward as South Tyneside Council seeks a development partner for Holborn.

The council will shortly launch a procurement process for a housing contractor to deliver over 400 two, three and four bedroomed homes on the site in Holborn, South Shields.

The plan will transform disused docks and surrounding brownfield land into a bustling mixed use development with high quality office accommodation, residential and a cultural offer.

The area is already home to award-winning schemes such as Harton Quays Park, business centre One Trinity Green and the Trinity South residential development.

Councillor Iain Malcolm, Leader of South Tyneside Council, said:

“We’re going to the market for a a housing partner and swiftly after, a remediation contractor, to maximise the potential of this unique site and deliver a striking, high quality offer. Together, they will help inform the remediation works and refine the final designs for the site.

“It will build on the significant investment that has gone into the wider riverside area as well as further strengthening the river to coast corridor, with the town centre at its heart.

“An attractive development with excellent ferry, bus and Metro links will help create a sustainable future for the town where businesses are keen to invest and residents are proud to live.”

A 4.6 hectare area of the 10.5 hectare site has Enterprise Zone status. The current proposals provide for 200,000 sq ft of Grade A office space within the Enterprise Zone plus 50,000 sq ft at Harton Quays.

A comprehensive remediation strategy is in development to de-risk the site given its long industrial heritage. The smaller graving docks will be retained and renovated to provide a beautiful public realm and preserve the riverside’s industrial history.

Martin Swales, Chief Executive of South Tyneside Council, said:

“South Tyneside has a proven track record in delivering town centre and coastal regeneration. Our ambitious programme of regeneration activity is already enhancing the quality of place and creating employment and economic opportunities. Holborn is the next phase of our generation-changing growth strategy.

“It will see the development of a sustainable business and residential community which broadens the South Tyneside offer and which builds upon the considerable regeneration that is ongoing in South Shields town centre, the Foreshore and the riverside, as well as providing improved connectivity between these different areas of the town.”
