In our latest guest blog, Jenny Lang, Programme Engagement Manager at Digital Catapult North East & Tees Valley (NETV) speaks about the recent launch of the North East & Tees Valley (NETV) Immersive Lab, in Gateshead and the growing tech sector in North East England.
The Launch
It’s been an exciting few months at Digital Catapult North East & Tees Valley (NETV) and this month has been no exception. November saw the launch of the region’s new Immersive Lab, currently housed in the Northern Design Centre in Gateshead. The Lab’s launch event, which attracted over 70 attendees, was an opportunity for businesses, individuals and academics to get hands on with virtual, augmented, and mixed reality content. We were fortunate enough to have demos from immersive companies who are leading on a global scale, and notably these companies were all born out of our beloved North East & Tees Valley!
The NETV Immersive Lab gives organisations of all sizes the opportunity to experience emerging content firsthand. It helps them to understand the positive impact the technology is having, improving processes and efficiencies across many sectors. Access to the lab also extends to academic and research institutions that are interested in collaborating with industry, to understand and advise on market growth.
North East & Tees Valley pioneers
Digital Catapult’s mission with the Immersive Lab, is to make the UK the best place in the world to create immersive content and technologies. Here in the North East & Tees Valley we have long been pioneers of the technology, boasting a strong and ever-growing ecosystem. To put this in perspective, the NETV Immersive Lab is one of only four in the country. Following nationwide analysis by Digital Catapult into immersive technology clusters across the UK, the region clearly stood out as being influential in the field.
Seeing is believing
Over the coming months we look forward to hosting a number of informal networking events and meet up’s, showing off the amazing talent we have in the region and enabling individuals to see for themselves what all the fuss is about!
As well as a facility in which to showcase the possibilities to enterprise, such as manufacturing and engineering, the Immersive Lab is available for hire, enabling immersive technology companies to demonstrate, test and develop using specialist equipment, including a mixed reality green screen studio.
