World class universities offering a talented and skilled employment pool for investors
With over 110,000 students in the region, studying in leading-edge facilities, and over 5,000 further education courses to pick from, it’s easy to see why students choose to study here.
And, even better, 77% of students who graduate from a North East University stay and work in the region – one of the highest graduate retention rates in the UK.
Both Durham and Newcastle Universities are part of the prestigious Russell Group – 24 specially selected, research-intensive universities that contribute to the intellectual reputation of the UK across the globe.
And our regional colleges are offering students a diverse and hands-on approach to training. The Aviation Academy based at Newcastle International Airport allows students to develop their skills in a practical environment whilst working towards a vocational qualification.
A collaborative approach to research and development between our universities and private sector has strengthened our position as a high quality and innovative location to invest.
University/industry collaboration includes partnerships between Durham University and KPMG, Ernst & Young and Deloitte; Newcastle University and PwC, Santander, P&G and Sage; Northumbria University and P&G, NHS and Northumbrian Water.
Our further education colleges have always forged strong partnerships with some of our biggest employers, helping to provide a steady flow of technical skills and talent. For example, Gateshead College works closely with Nissan to provide automotive engineering and low carbon skills to its Sunderland plant.
