Assets & Facilities

North East England is home to state-of-the-art facilities that offer fintech companies some of the best technology, data and research in the UK.

Companies locating to the region have a fantastic choice of workspace too. From cost-effective studio space and small creative spaces to Grade A offices in city centres and edge-of-town business parks, there is something for fintech businesses of every size.

The National Innovation Centre for Data (NICD) is located in The Catalyst on Newcastle Helix and provides a space for collaboration, knowledge transfer and innovation. NICD is playing a key role in the Government’s Industrial and Digital Strategy. The £30 million centre, which is the only one of its kind in the UK, is a key asset for companies looking to harness and exploit data to streamline their own processes, find new market opportunities, understand the benefits of innovation and data strategy, and be supported to build their own data teams internally.

Newcastle is the only UK city with two centres of excellence for cybersecurity research, based at Newcastle University and Northumbria University.

The £10 million National Cyber Security Centre Academic Centre of Excellence at Newcastle University is part of the UK GCHQ Research Institute and specialises in data analytics, including identifying banking fraud and intrusion detection in fintech.

Other regional hubs for fintech activity include Barclays Eagles Labs at TusPark in Newcastle, Newcastle Helix, Racquets Court and Sunderland Software City. These facilities offer desk and office space as well as access to the fintech and wider tech community, events and business support. Fintech companies can also access national data from NOMIS (a service by the National Office for Statistics) based at Durham University.
