PROTO in Gateshead is Europe’s first dedicated centre for emerging technology. Its world-class facilities include a motion capture studio, sound stage for digital content creation and a photogrammetry rig to create 3D models.
The 5G Immersive Lab, gives businesses the chance to experience immersive technology – such as augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed reality – first-hand to improve the impact and efficiency of the technology.

North East England is also a growing force in the esport market, boasting fantastic esport courses, meet-ups and esport companies such as Newcastle-based Viperio and Hitmarker which compliments the Games Development Sector. The British Esports flagship Gaming and Esports Arena will be located in Sunderland in 2026. The 15,000 sq. ft. arena, which sits alongside the National Esports Performance Campus (NEPC) also in the city.
