Record North East delegation ready for MIPIM 2019

Next week, the region’s private and public sectors are heading to MIPIM 2019, the world’s largest international property event held in Cannes. This is the fourth year Invest Newcastle have led a high-level delegation, with a record 32 partners joining them this year.

Private sector partners include Avison Young, the World Wheel Company, UK Land Estates, Ryder Architecture, Mott Macdonald, Newby, Sir Robert McAlpine and Engie. The Invest Newcastle delegation, of more than 80 people, will all play an integral part in promoting the North East’s strengths on a global stage as one of the fastest growing places in which to invest, develop or locate.  Also attending alongside Newcastle City Council are Gateshead Council and first-time public sector partners Business Durham and Invest North East England.

The delegation has announced a full programme of events that will take place over three days, providing the opportunity for the region to showcase its expertise to some of the most influential people in the property sector. Events hosted on the Invest Newcastle Stand include a lunchtime session on the Tuesday titled ‘Devolution: Our time to deliver’ where Pat Ritchie, Newcastle City Council, Henri Murison, Northern Powerhouse Partnership, Tom Walker, Homes England and Eamonn Boylan, Greater Manchester Combined Authority will discuss devolution and the role it plays in transforming a city region.

Events throughout the week will also showcase key developments such as Newcastle Helix, Stephenson Quarter and East Pilgrim Street. In addition, the World Wheel Company will launch their £100m plan to build Europe’s Tallest Observation Wheel on Newcastle’s quayside and Gateshead Council will launch their much anticipated 12-hectare Baltic Quarter development site set in the heart of NewcastleGateshead Quays.

On the final day Pat Ritchie, Chief Executive, Newcastle City Council will be joined by experts such as Walter Boettcher from Colliers International and Melanie Leech from the British Property Federation to discuss the power of partnerships in accelerating the growth of R&D and innovation hubs. The final event will be a in conversation session between Pat Ritchie, Newcastle City Council and Sir Ed Lister, Homes England. This event will explore how Newcastle is positioned at the forefront of innovation for healthy ageing and how this knowledge and experience has export potential. It will look at how other leading global locations are addressing these challenges and how international partnerships can help create solutions for better living.

Invest Newcastle has also been ranked as one of the winners at the FDi location awards. They will be attending this ceremony alongside other investment promotion agencies and professionals to celebrate some of the most successful locations across the globe.

Jennifer Hartley, Director, Invest Newcastle said: “I am thrilled that 32 partners are joining us this year, helping us to position ourselves globally as a leading city and to secure future investment. We couldn’t do this without the support from our partners and we couldn’t be prouder to be promoting our region alongside more than 80 delegates. The size of the delegation this year is testament to the collaborative nature of the business community, the confidence we have in business and the collective ambition we all have for our region.

“Assets such as Newcastle Helix and the National Innovation Centres for Ageing and Data are attracting investment and talent to the city and our ambition to become a leading smart city and our expertise in ageing is really helping to strengthen Newcastle’s international proposition. Newcastle is at the heart of a region of fast growth, innovation and expertise and we can’t wait to tell the international property world all about it.”

Pat Ritchie, Chief Executive, Newcastle City Council, added:

“Having secured devolved powers earlier this year, 2019 marks a major milestone in Newcastle City Region’s history. As we prepare for a mayoral election in May, we have already set out some ambitious plans for investing in high quality jobs for the region and prepared the ground for accelerating our global reach and influence. As ever, MIPIM is an invaluable opportunity for us to join the UK’s major cities on a global stage to lever inward investment and promote Newcastle as an international destination.”

Business Durham will be showcasing the significant investment and opportunity in County Durham, that has so far generated a pipeline of over £3.4 billion.

Cllr Carl Marshall, Durham County Council’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Regeneration, said:

“We are delighted to be joining with more than 30 businesses and partners from across the region at this prestigious event which really gives us the chance to sell all our county has to offer to international property companies. Attending MIPIM is an opportunity for us to attract major investment in County Durham from around the world with the potential to create hundreds of jobs.”

MIPIM takes place March 12-15 at Palais des Festivals in Cannes, bringing together some of the most influential investors from across the property sector. More than 26,000 delegates from 100 countries attend, providing opportunities to connect with the industry’s key decision makers.
