The Port of Blyth has become the first UK port to achieve the new ISO 45001 standard in Occupational Health & Safety Management.

The prominent standard follows other generic management system approaches such as ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 and is now regarded as the single benchmark for the management of occupational health and safety.

Developed by a committee of occupational health and safety experts, the standard takes into account other International Standards such as OHSAS 18001 as well as the International Labour Organization’s international labour standards and conventions.

Martin Lawlor, Chief Executive of Port of Blyth, said: “We’re delighted to have achieved this important standard as quickly as we have, and to be the first UK port to do so clearly demonstrates our significant commitment to safety to all of our clients and customers across numerous sectors.

“We could not have achieved this without the support of all of our employees and so I’d like to thank them for their cooperation and commitment to achieving this landmark result. Our Health & Safety team will now lead on the continuous improvement programme that the standard requires.”

As a home to some of the world largest offshore and renewable energy firms, Port of Blyth is regarded as one of the UK’s leading offshore energy bases, making a significant contribution to the sector nationally
