Second only to the capital in growth
We have over 71,000 companies in the region, and experienced one of the highest growth rates in company numbers in recent years, second only to London.
North East England has outperformed every other English region outside London on the number of new jobs created from foreign direct investment in 2019/20, relative to its population. The latest figures from The Department for International Trade (DIT) show that in 2019/20 the North East created 179 jobs for every 100,000 people (working age population), placing it behind only London as the best performing area of the country.
From the US to New Zealand to India, global businesses choose to locate and expand in North East England. We have also seen significant growth in existing companies, with Nissan being one of the top investing companies.
Companies regularly cite our ‘market size and growth potential’, skilled workforce and infrastructure as reasons for locating here.
Other examples of key investors include Accenture, Hitachi Rail Europe, Concentrix, ResQ, Ubisoft and Sage. New investors are being attracted all the time; some of the most recent being technology company, Xplor, business services company, Verisure and one of the largest global companies, Amazon.
