Our region has a growing and collaborative tech sector. Established tech clusters and networks provide an unrivalled eco-system to support start-up and growing companies moving to the area through events, mentoring, funding and collective problem-solving.

The North East is a driving force for digital innovation and many international businesses including Sage UK, Atom Bank, Bede Gaming, Tharsus and tombola have headquarters here. Other software and gaming companies such as Accenture, DXC Technology, Red Hat Solutions and Ubisoft Reflections enjoy global success from their North East bases, and pioneers in the subsea engineering and space industries are developing innovative technologies in our region.

The region’s five universities and excellent higher education colleges provide a strong pipeline of talent for the digital and tech sector. With 54,000 students studying Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects in our universities and we have the highest proportion of computer science students in England.  Plus, our region’s education institutions and local delivery partners offer specialist courses in emerging technology, e-sports, AI & machine learning, immersive tech and space science.

We have a huge range of office and studio space available at business parks and in city centres, as well as opportunities for bespoke workspace solutions.

North East England is paving the way for future advancements in digital technology that will benefit all of society. In 2021, Newcastle was ranked the smartest city in the UK, and above Hong Kong, San Francisco and Dublin in the Smart City Index (published by IMD Smart City Observatory), which measures the technological provisions of cities on health and safety, mobility, activities, opportunities and governance.

Our stunning coastline spans from Durham to Northumberland and boasts some of the most picturesque beaches in the country. We have woodlands, forests and open countryside as well as bustling city centres in Newcastle, Durham and Sunderland. Our quality of life is simply second to none.
